Holiday Luncheon
December 2010
Our annual luncheon
was held this year at the beautiful home of our incoming
chapter president, Lynn Wolfstone. About 25 members
attended, and enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, as well
as a slide show depicting the wonderful gardens from
this year's APLD conference in Dallas, TX.
Awards were given
this year to members who contributed above and beyond
the norm: Jan Main received a gorgeous red
amaryllis and many thanks for her work this year leading
APLD's collaboration with Willamette West Habitat for
Humanity; and our Program Co-Chairs Janette Gallagher
and Bev Ashenden received gift certificates for
their excellent work putting together all of our
workshops, tours, Designer to Designers, and other
events. |

Membership chair Jim Larson updates the group on new
member benefits for 2011. |

The lunch became partly a construction site tour as we
all got to view the progress of the new stone patio,
water feature, fire table and other landscape remodeling
work being done at the Wolfstones'. |

Folks
gather in the kitchen to set out dishes and
catch up on the latest business news. |

APLD Construction Site
Tour:
October 2010
We visited the project of designer firm
Perennial Partners and landscape installer
Landscape
East & West. The lead designers are Lucy Hardiman and
Linda Hannon, and the project manager from Landscape
East & West is Bjorn Nordquist.
This project features
a multi-level back yard area, that will be connected to
the main floor of the home by an elevated deck and
stairs. In order to provide light to the basement level
windows, the new deck will be inset with an ingenious
steel grating, and the stairs will have floating steps,
without risers.
The attention to detail is what makes this design and
installation so special, with every material and spec
being carefully selected and thought through. An
upper-level block retaining wall has a satisfying curve
to it, and the cap block holds in place some
strategically-spaced LED lights that are unobtrusive,
but will create path lighting below. The middle and
lower patios are delineated by specially-treated
concrete walls, that have an integral color and
acid-etched surface that is very attractive.

Willamette West Habitat for
Humanity Planting Day:
October 2010
Working with WWHfH for the 6th year, our
chapter was again involved with the design and planting
of the front yards of new Habitat homes, this time at
the Vance Place project in Aloha. For the first time,
our chapter sponsored a Student Design Competition
whereby landscape design students at Portland Community
College had the opportunity to try their hand at
creating planting plans for the sites. They were
mentored in the process by experienced designers and
their submissions were judged by a panel of our members.
Please see below for pictures of our winners and their
designs!
Special thanks go to John Gawlista of
Professional Grounds Management who sent over
two of his best people to help us with the installation.
Thanks John! |

APLD
member Deb Rossi works with a Habitat volunteer to plant
some perennials. |

Landscape
design student Hannah Snyder helps with the planting. |

Experienced landscape installers from Professional
Grounds Management helped us get the plants in the
ground. |

APLD
member Jan Main (center) did an excellent job
coordinating the event with Habitat folks. Shown here
with Jan are Habitat directors Hal Brockman and Kathleen
Galaway. |
The
four winning student designers are (left to right):
Julie Williams, Hannah Snyder, Julia Eggert, and Debra
Berger.
Their planting plans were installed at the event by all
of the volunteers and they turned out beautifully! |

APLD Construction Site
Tour:
June 2010
We revisited the
project of designer Lori Scott of
Lori Scott Landscape Design
that we had seen last October in its earlier phases. The
contractors involved in this installation are Kevin
Schindler of Autumn
Leaf Landscaping
and David West of
Structures in Landscaping.
The project came
together beautifully to create a spectacular new
landscape for the homeowners. The many gorgeous new
features include an infinity edge water feature, a steel
and wood pergola, cut bluestone patio, gas fire pit, and
an elevated ipe deck with metal rails and floating
steps. (Please click on the
thumbnails to see the larger photos). |

APLD/ANLD JOINT
WINTER WORKSHOP: After
Design...Building a Garden
January 2010
This highly-successful
workshop
was attended by over 100 landscape designers, landscape
contractors, nursery representatives, and plant
procurers. Morning speakers discussed topics such as:
How to get your design documents bid-ready; How to issue
a bid package and learn how to compare bids; How to
create a team atmosphere with your business, your
clients, and your contractors; What to do when things go
wrong; and How to work with do-it-yourselfers.
The afternoon program
consisted of two panels of contractors and designers who
discussed how these two groups can work together for
mutual profitability and client satisfaction, as well as
how to stay involved throughout the installation process
to give your clients the most value out of their
designs. |
