members review plans at a recent construction site tour

Our Chapter is focused on bringing design-oriented programs to our members in numerous ways to help them develop their professional skills. We're pleased to offer the following unique events:

Designer to Designer Events:
This is our new core program that meets every other month. Each D2D program will feature either a design review format
or a topical format with areas of interest for discussion.

Construction Site Tours:

We visit landscape installations that are in progress, to discuss the details of construction and learn firsthand from the designers and the contractors how things are built and how to problem-solve on site as needed.

  • To further our mission of providing our members with design forums tailored to their needs, we will also continue to seek out and offer high-end design programs annually, as possible

APLD Oregon is proud to announce our newest member program:
 "DESIGNER TO DESIGNER".

The intent behind these gatherings is to allow our members to learn from one another in a casual, intimate setting. We will meet in members' homes on both the West and East side of Portland on the same day, and you're welcome to attend whichever meeting you prefer. Designer to Designer will alternate between a Design Review style and a Topical style. The meeting times & dates will also vary depending on what the attending members want. D2D meetings will be held every other month.

MEETING FORMATS:

Design Review:
This is an opportunity to share design triumphs and troubles with other designers. Bring pictures and/or drawings of projects you’ve done or bring along a current challenge and ask for other perspectives. It’s a relaxed time to talk shop with other designers.

Topical:
Our membership survey was a rich source of potential topics. Our goal however, is to tailor these meetings to those who attend. So the 2010 topics will come from suggestions gathered at the first few meetings. We will announce the topic ahead of time and encourage everyone to join the discussion with their thoughts, ideas, and questions.

See our 2010 Calendar of Events for dates of upcoming "Designer to Designer"
 and Construction Site Tours.

Legislative Watchdogs go to Salem!
--by Vanessa Nagel, APLD Oregon President

Landscape designers become Legislative Watchdogs

On May 8th, 2009 Amy Whitworth and I, along with 2 other landscape designers and ANLD members Paul Taylor & Gail Dresner, spent most of the day going to Salem to meet with the OSLAB (Oregon State Landscape Architect’s Board) and a member of the OLCB (Oregon Landscape Contractor’s Board). There we had an opportunity to promote the ability of designers to continue practicing as we now practice in Oregon. I stressed the international nature of APLD, along with the fact that we promote Certification of our members.

Attached is a photo of the 4 of us inside the building where we met. The OLCB representative was particularly interested in the fact that APLD has a landscape designer Certification program, stating that it could potentially be a method of recognizing landscape/garden designers.
