Willamette West Habitat for
Humanity Planting Day:
October 2011
Working with WWHfH for the
7th year, our
chapter was again involved with the design and planting
of the front yards of new Habitat homes, this time at
the Ramble Glen project in Aloha.
For the second
year,
our chapter sponsored a Student Design Competition
whereby landscape design students at Portland Community
College had the opportunity to try their hand at
creating planting plans for the sites. Deborah Rossi did
a wonderful job coordinating the student submissions and
making sure they were
mentored in the process by experienced designers. She
also worked with our Habitat sponsors to coordinate the
plant delivery, soil amending, etc. Thanks Deb! Students
also helped with the planting, so they got to see their
designs come to life.
Special thanks go to
Recology who provided wonderful soil amendment
and mulch for the plants. Also, thanks to John Gawlista of
Professional Grounds Management whose team did
our soil preparation and helped with planting. Thanks
also to
Cascadian Nurseries who provided the plant
material. |

Evening Dinner for Members at
Cascadian Nurseries
September 2011
Our members gathered
at the beautiful pergola and waterfall at Cascadian
Nurseries for a catered dinner with hosted wine bar.
Over 30 members and guests attended and had a chance to recap the
spring and summer design seasons, as well as enjoy a
lovely late summer evening.
Chapter President
Lynn Wolfstone gave recognition awards
to our 2011 APLD Oregon chapter sponsors, John Gawlista
of
PGM Landscape Management and Jim Larson of
Cascadian Nurseries. Many thanks to both
companies for their continuing support and help!
She also took the
occasion to give an award to a student landscape
designer, Debra Berger, who won our chapter's Student
Landscape Design Competition by creating an attractive
and functional planting plan for the Willamette West
Habitat for Humanity 2011 project.
Our guest speaker was
Harry Auerbach, Portland's Chief Deputy City Attorney,
who brought us up to speed on the newly revised Portland
City Tree codes which he helped to rewrite. |

Tape vs. Technology: Laser
level instruction and demonstration
July 2011
Member Barb Simon,
APLD, offered this property she is designing with a
2-way slope as a venue for a workshop about how to
correctly and efficiently measure and record slope and
elevation changes. Landscape contractor Alfred Dinsdale,
of Dinsdale Landscape Contractors, Inc. was there
to help demonstrate correct technique. Also there was a
representative from Kuker-Ranken, the
manufacturer, who demonstrated a number of hand-held and
fixed distance and elevation measuring systems. |

Design Within Reach Studio
& restaurant evening
May 2011
A group of APLD'ers
was treated to wine and cheese appetizers at the
beautiful showroom of Design Within Reach in
downtown Portland. Extremely knowledgeable
representatives of DWR showed us their latest line of
contemporary outdoor furnishings, and explained how APLD
members can participate in their trade discount program
and order direct from them. We followed up the showroom
visit with dinner at the nearby Deschutes Brew Pub to
talk more about our spring time projects. |

2011 Better Living Home and
Garden Show
March 2011
APLD Oregon was
honored to be invited by the Better Living Show's
proprietors to design and install landscaped spaces
around the Show's centerpiece "Blue Energy" home.
Members Amy Whitworth, Izzy Baptista, and Patricia
Acheff, APLD worked as a team to design and create the
home's outdoor spaces using mostly native and
wildlife-friendly plants, re-purposed materials, and
including an organic kitchen garden.
The landscape was
installed by APLD sponsor PGM Landscape Services
with only a three-week lead time to create the custom
metal screens, wood planter beds and arbor, and water
feature. Thanks to them for an amazing job! |
